Spain works equally well for a city stay and a beach holiday. Barcelona and Madrid deliver architecture, museums and one of Europe's strongest restaurant scenes; the Costa del Sol around Málaga offers a long, reliable season; and Tenerife in the Canaries is warm in the middle of winter.

A common pattern is three or four days in a city followed by a week by the sea.
